QUOTE:

"The more we have gotten to know families at Seton, the more we have realized how special it is. EVERYONE loves the school, and there are so many enthusiastic supporters among the Seton parents."
- Michelle S., Seton Parent

What is Seton’s history?
Seton Catholic School was founded by a group of parents from Hudson, Ohio, who sought a faith-based elementary school education for their children. Diocese of Cleveland Bishop Anthony Pilla supported this idea, and the parents began a two-year journey of faith toward opening an independent Catholic school. Formation of a nonprofit corporation and a board of directors to govern the school was inaugurated. On November 1, 1996, Bishop Pilla (ret.) issued a decree stating that Seton Catholic School was officially established according to Canon Law. The school opened its doors on August 25, 1997, as one of the first and only independent Catholic schools and serves as a model for the new Catholic school. Read more about "The Seton Story".

What is the school’s mission?
Inspired by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and rooted in our Catholic faith, Seton Catholic School fosters spiritual development, academic excellence, responsibility to self and service to others.  Learn about our philosophy.

Why the recent expansion?
From an initial enrollment of 83 students in 1997, Seton has grown to a student body of over 400 in grades Kindergarten through 8 for the 2010-2011 school year. Seton serves students from more than 20  communities. This growth necessitated an enhancement of the facility to include twelve new classrooms, a science lab, administrative offices, and renovations to the Chapel, original building, and campus. Plans for a new gymnasium and additional classrooms to accommodate increasing enrollment will be initiated as funds become available.

What is a typical class size?
Generally, classes at Seton range from 16 to 25 students. Kindergarten, first, and second grade classes have both a teacher and an aide. Our teacher-to-student ratio in these classes is approximately 1 to 12.

What are the school hours?
The school day begins at 8:15 A.M. and ends at 3:15 P.M. for all students - one campus with one schedule.  The Extended Day Program before and after care hours are available 7:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. and is staffed by fully certified teachers.

Do you have openings available for new students?
In some grades, yes. Typically, as families move out of the area there are openings. Our first priority is to serve the legacy students of families who are currently enrolled. Additional spaces are available from there. We do accept students during the school year on a case-by-case basis.
More details on admission.

Seton’s curriculum includes religion, reading, language arts, phonics (K-3), spelling, handwriting, mathematics, science, social studies, health, physical education, foreign language (Spanish), music/orchestra, art, technology; and library. More about the curriculum.

How is the quality of academics?
Seton offers an outstanding education. Enrichment and individual attention in the classroom is provided by an excellent teaching staff (33% hold Masters Degrees and above). Standardized test scores are superior and compare favorably to other schools locally and nationally. Focus is on continuous improvement and individual student growth. Our graduates are accepted to and attend highly respected public and private high schools in the area. Parents and alumni validate that Seton graduates are well prepared to continue their education in challenging academic environments at the collegiate level.

How are computers used at Seton?
Given the importance of technology to life skills today and in the future, computers are an integral part of the educational experience at Seton and are in every classroom. In addition, an outstanding computer lab with state-of-the-art hardware and software is used for technology classes at all grade levels. Teachers also schedule use of the lab for classroom projects during available times.  ActivBoards and SMART Boards are in each classroom. The middle school experience at Seton includes the use of a mobile wireless laptop lab and interactive whiteboards. Technology is constantly evaluated to remain authentic and with a vision to the future.

Is there a hot lunch program?
Yes. Seton is a satellite location of the Hudson City Schools Food Service lunch program. A hot meal and bag/express meal are offered daily. Milk also is available. View the lunch menu.

What is the cost of tuition?
We work very hard to keep tuition as affordable as possible. For the 2010-2011 school year, tuition is $4,825 for the first child, $4,583 for the second, $4,342 for the third, $4,101 for the fourth and over. Total operating cost to educate a student at Seton exceeds the tuition amount. Fundraising efforts, both school-sponsored and grant/donor solicited - including our Annual Fund, “A Night To Remember” auction event, and Golf Outing, are important elements that offset the true cost of education. Seton is an independent, self-sustaining Catholic school that does not receive direct financial support from any parish or religious order. [Tuition is set in mid-January for the following year.]  More about tuition and financial aid.

Is financial aid available?
Yes. Seton provides a completely confidential tuition assistance process.  The school offers a Tuition Assistance Progam, whereby a financial form is submitted by the applying family to TADS, the tuition aid service.  The generosity of contributions to Seton from the Caniglia, Curtin, Scott, and Sorgi families through the Arthur and Jane Caniglia Scholarship, Teresa Scott Devine Memorial Scholarship, Marilyn McSherry Curtin Scholarship Endowment, The Lucy Sorgi Financial Aid Endowment, and the Sister Marie Damicone Scholarship Fund help to provide need-based funds. In addition, a family may reduce its tuition costs through use of the Tuition Reduction Incentive Program (TRIP).

Is bus transportation available?
In 2010-2011, bus transportation will be available for students who live in Aurora, Hudson, Stow-Munroe Falls, Streetsboro, Twinsburg, and Woodridge.  Additional information on transportation is provided through the school’s main office.

Is there a before/after school care program?
An extended day program is available each day from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Students are well-supervised, and the time is structured to allow for homework, a nutritious snack, and recreation (outdoors as weather permits).

What extra-curricular activities are offered?
Education of the whole person involves offering a wide range of activities. CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) sponsored sports such as soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, track and field, baseball, wrestling, and cheerleading are available. Other activities include piano and violin lessons, scouting, choir, skiing/snowboarding, student council, student ministry, student newspaper, chess club, Power of the Pen, National Geographic Bee, Science Fair, Science Olympiad, various grade level musicals and plays, and additional enrichment opportunities.

What about auxiliary services?
Our educational resources are supplemented through auxiliary services provided to Seton by a remedial tutor, speech pathologist, psychologist, nurse and nurse aide (full-time).

What is the admissions policy?
Admission to Seton is based on eligibility, interview with the principal, previous diagnostic test scores, school transcripts for grades 1 through 8, kindergarten screening, and the school’s ability to provide for the continued moral, educational, and social growth of the student. More admissions information.

Must a family be Catholic for a child to attend Seton?
Seton Catholic School of Hudson recruits and admits students of any race, color, gender, or ethnic origin to all its rights, privileges, programs and activities. In addition, the school will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational programs, scholarships, fee waivers, and athletics/extracurricular activities. Seton welcomes applications from families of all backgrounds. We strive to be inclusive and to learn from each other’s diverse experiences. However, in grades where openings are limited, we do give priority to Catholic families.
